Dative Constructions in Chinese
نویسنده
چکیده
There are three dative constructions in Chinese. A verb may be present in just one, in two, or in all three constructions. A pattern can be captured in the constructional approach. While the constructions all carry a sense of transfer, they differ in terms of range of transfer and argument role of the dative object or the gei object. The constructional view also provides an account of the pattern of alternation by allowing various senses of transfer to be distinguished in terms of core vs. extended. A verb expressing a core meaning of transfer participates in the three-way alternation, while a verb with an extended meaning of transfer participates in the two-way alternation, and a verb with an even further extended meaning of transfer does not participate in any alternation.

The Acquisition of Chinese Dative Constructions
The present paper examines the acquisition of the dative construction in Chinese, centering on issues raised in Baker’s Paradox relating to how children figure out that certain syntactic rules are not completely productive (Baker, 1979; Pinker 1989). We tested 29 Chinese speaking children from Taiwan, on a forced-choice grammaticality judgment test comparing double object constructions to prepo...
متن کاملDative Shift in Chinese and English : A Lexical Mapping Account
This paper proposes two revisions to the Lexical Mapping Theory as part of UG and accounts for dative shift and the interaction between dative shift and passive in Chinese and English. The overall strategy is to maximize the universality of the Lexical Mapping Theory by allowing only morpholexical operations to be language-specific.
متن کاملImpaired Comprehension of Alternating Syntactic Constructions in Autism
Individuals on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum have significant impairments in communication. Language delay can occur, particularly in syntactic or structural linguistic knowledge. However, classically observed semantic deficits generally overshadow these structural deficits. This research examined the potential effects on comprehension of dative expressions that exhibited sy...
متن کاملDiscourse Effects on EFL Learners’ Production of Dative Constructions
This study investigated the discourse effects on intermediate English as foreign language (EFL) learners’ production of dative constructions including prepositional dative (PD), I gave a book to John, and double-object dative (DOD), I gave John a book. The author argues that the alternation between these two constructions is determined by the order of given and new (GN) information that is foll...
متن کاملA Working Report on Statistically Modeling Dative Variation in Mandarin Chinese
Dative variation is a widely observed syntactic phenomenon in world languages (e.g. I gave John a book and I gave a book to John). It has been shown that which surface form will be used in a dative sentence is not a completely random choice, rather, it is conditioned by a wide range of linguistic factors. Previous work by Bresnan and colleagues adopted a statistical modeling approach to investi...
